The Ajanta caves, located deep within the Sahyadris hills above the Waghora, portray the tale of Buddhism that reigned here for the period of 200 BC to 650 AD. Ajanta's astounding cave temples are cut into the rocky sides of a spectacular crescent-shaped canyon, at the top of which is a cascade that drops over the mountain edge in a series of seven steps to a pond far-off below.
Deep within the mountains are the Buddhist Chaityas - Viharas prayer and monastery caves. They envelop a period of 800 years where under the imperial support of ruling dynasties, expert artists helped Buddhist monks to produce outstanding frescos reciting the legend of Buddha in his phase of embodiments, whilst concurrently creating a painted evidence of the scene of life in prehistoric India.
