THE
CITY OF TAJ: AGRA
Places of
Interest
Tajmahal is among the
most famous Seven Wonders of the World.
This is a tomb which is the symbol of
love and devotion. Tajmahal is in a
city called Agra in India. This place
is around 200 kilometers from the Indian
capital city of Delhi. Agra is among
the most visited cities in India. Famous
for its archeological monuments and
heritage this place had a record of
attracting tourists. Tajmahal is one
of the wonders of the world and if you
are planning a trip to India then it
will be incomplete without a visit to
the Tajmahal.
History
of TAJ-MAHAL
An
immense mausoleum of white marble,
built in Agra between 1631 and
1648, Taj Mahal was built under
the Mogul Emperor Shahjahan in
memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz
Mahal. Taj Mahal was dedicated
to Mumtaz Mahal who died while
bearing her fourteenth child.
Shahjahan was deeply in love with
his wife and he wanted to make
a piece which should be devoted
to his wife so for this the great
Tajmahal was built.
Tajmahal, for centuries,
has inspired poets, painters and
musicians to try and capture its
elusive magic in word, colour
and song. TajMahal which stands
on the banks of Yamuna River in
the city of Agra took 22 years
to complete the construction.
The construction of the Tajmahal
was completed in the year 1654.
According to Tavernier, an eminent
traveller and historian of those
times recorded the number of workmen
engaged in the construction as
20,000. The construction materials
were brought from all over India
and Asia. A fleet of 1000 elephants
were used to transport the materials
to the site. 28 types of precious
and semi-precious stones were
inlaid into white marble to create
this wonder of the world.
Tajmahal is a world
heritage where you can witness
a masterpiece. It is said that
thousands of artists were involved
in designing and crafting of this
monument. There is a great and
passionate history related to
this wonder.
The
city of AGRA
Agra
is a beautiful city with some
of the remarkable Mogul structures
and monuments. The best time to
visit this city is during January
to April and from September to
December. The weather here is
very hot and during monsoon it
becomes damp. There are various
monuments which can be seen in
Agra so you better plan for at
least a three days trip to this
state. Avoid visiting this city
from December to January, as during
this time the weather is very
cold and you get thick fog. The
temperature can decrease to as
low as zero degree.
Places
to visit around AGRA
The Taj tour Highlights
include the following
1. A visit to Tajmahal
2. A trip inside the Agra fort
3. A trip to Fatehpur Sikri

& Vrindavan, which are related
to the birth place of Lord Krishna.
FATEHPUR
SIKRI
37km from the
city of Agra is this ghost city
that was once the capital of
Mughal India. Akbar built the
city between 1571 and 1585.
But he was forced to abandon
the capital because of water
shortage and he shifted the
capital to Lahore for a brief
period. Now about 30,000 people
inhabit this deserted capital.
Thanks to the archaeological
department of India, the city
is well preserved as it was
built. The city is a fine example
of culmination of Mughal and
Hindu architecture. Any visitor
to Agra must have a go at Fatehpur
Sikri. Fatehpur Sikri mosque
was said to be built in lines
of the holy mosque in Mecca.
Entrance to the mosque is through
the Buland Darwaza that is 54m
high. To the north of the mosque
is the mausoleum of Saleem Chtisti,
the Sufi saint who blessed Akbar
to have a male offspring.
Diwan-E-Am:
The first enclosure of the palace
is a vast courtyard in which the
emperor used to give daily public
audience and dispense justice.
Diwan-E-Khas: The Diwan-I-Am
gave access to a second enclosure,
a large quadrangle which has all
finest buildings of Fatehpur Sikri.
At the northern end is the Diwan-I-Khas.
Also referred to as the Hall of
Private Audiences, it is an astonishing
chamber dominated by a massive
carved pillar, which supports
a fantastic capital above which
is a balcony. Private Living Quarter:
These are at the southern end
of the quadrangle, clustered around
a pool, the Anup Talao. The structures
here include Akbar's library,
the scene of his intellectual
activity. A window overlooked
the Daftarkhana, or record office.
Above this is the Khwabgah, `the
palace of dreams' or Akbar's bedroom.
This whole space was warmed or
cooled by water channels. Other
places of interest are, Panch
Mahal, Salim Christy's Mausoleum,
Jodhabai's Palace, Mariam's Palace,
Hawa Mahal, Birbal's Palace and
Jama Masjid.
MATHURA
Mathura
on the banks of River Yamuna is
the birthplace of Lord Krishna,
an incarnation of Lord Vishnu.
Mathura has been a sacred pilgrimage
centre for many centuries. The
government museum with a vast
collection of superb sculptures,
terracotta images, coins and bronze
objects those date back between
5th century BC and 12th century
AD are worth probing through.
SIKANDARA
Akbar
the great, the greatest of all
Mughal emperors is laid to rest
in the midst of a large garden
about 10km away from Agra. This
structure has perfect blending
of Hindu, Christian, Muslim, Buddhist
and Jain motifs. This place has
a row of beautiful arches and
doorways those make it a photographer's
delight. Akbar started building
his Mausoleum and Jahangir, his
son, completed it. Jahangir modified
the structure that contributed
to the distortion of the original
architectural design.
